I was watching TV last night and was bombarded with one depiction after another of "Stupid Man." What do I mean? Since the Great Sexual Revolution of the late 60's and early 70's, there has been a slow progression of the sport of man-bashing. Lately it seems that this has manifested itself into the depiction of the American male as a bufoon, a dolt, an idiot. It's everywhere. Try as you may, you can't find one depiction of a man on television that is respected by women. Every last one of them is an idiot. Even in advertisements, men are stupid. This may not seem like that big of a deal, until you consider the alternatives. Imagine if we depicted every woman on TV as a slut, or a moron. What about every African-American as lazy and shiftless? Every Hispanic or Latino as a car thief? Every Hindu Pakistani as a 7-11 clerk? The NAACP, NOW, and everyone else would be screaming bloody murder. But, day in and day out, we tolerate this debasing of the American male down to the level of an idiot savant.
Let's take a moment and set the record straight. The American man made this country. The American man invented every great thing we have today. The cotton gin, the light bulb, the telephone, the polio vaccine, pinicillin, all of it, invented by men. Great men invented the airplane and another great man flew it across the ocean first. Another great man strapped himself to one and broke the sound barrier. American men put another great man on the surface of the moon. American men spread syphillis to the natives and then eradicated them and small pox. Despite the syphillis thing, the spirit of the American man has been the greatest thing in the history of the world. If it weren't for men, women would still be doing our laundry down by the creek with a stick. We gave them the washer and dryer. This leads me to ask the following question: Who are and where are the Great Women? Can anyone name one, just one, truly Great Woman and what exactly was her contribution to the betterment of mankind? What daring sacrifice did she make?
Women have had 35 years of "liberation" to show us greatness. Can someone name me one, please?
Just for the record, burning a bra and starting a magazine do not qualify as huge societal achievements. Neither does flying half way around the world and then crashing. Also, to qualify as great, more than one percent of the population should have heard about this person. Elected officials and athletes also do not qualify as great.
Now, go. Name me a Great Woman and what she did. I'll wait. In the mean time, pay close attention to how men are portrayed on TV.
