I know that what I'm about to say is going to possibly piss some people off, but I don't care.
For the past 2-3 days, I've felt that the colonialization of the American territories should be expanding into the middle east. It seemed evident to me that certain governments have sacrificed their right to live and peacefully co-exist with the rest of the civilized world, and therefore, should be "occupied" by the US, permanently. However, after much thought and deliberation, I think I have changed my mind. I think it would be a huge mistake for the US to take any direct military action against the Taliban, Afghanistan, or bin Laden. I realize that emotions are high right now and that we want someone to pay for what was done. But, I feel that whatever it is we want to accomplish will fail if we just go in there kickin' towel-head ass and takin' names. This is a type of enemy that defies logic and we will never understand. They are willing to blow themselves up to kill us. Even if we go in with surgical air strikes or ground troops, I think we will lose more Americans for nothing we will never solve this problem. I have a few reasons for feeling this way. First and foremost, these people fought the Soviets for 10 years and won. Think about that for a minute. TEN years of fighting against the SOVIETS. Can you imagine seeing all those potential body bags and coffins covered with American flags every night on the news? And the Soviets still lost against nomadic towel-head fanatics. Secondly, I feel that this type of fundamental suicidal fanaticism is such that if you kill one, then 2-3 more will vow to martyr themselves as revenge in more terrorist attacks. At best I think all we should hope to do is contain and control them, but as soon as we start to try to wipe them off the ass of the Earth, they will fester and spread like a cancer. Thirdly, I simply feel that given the 10 year victorious war with the Soviets should have taught us Westerners something about these people.
Nikolai Kovalyov, the former head of Russia's Federal Security Service, the KGB's main
successor, warned Friday that a U.S. attack on Afghanistan would fail to reach bin
Laden and would backfire on the United States.
"In Afghanistan's mountainous terrain, it takes a trainload of explosives to destroy
three militants," he said at a news conference. "The chance of hitting bin Laden is
zero."
Lastly, I am very afraid that the next attack of theirs is going to be much, much worse than the Trade Centers, perhaps biological. (I had a dream that some sick bastard blew himself up on the floor of the Stock Exchange, but that's a story for another day.)
I would hate to see more Americans die for this fight. Perhaps the best offense is a strong defense and not the other way around. Embargo, sanction, deprive, whatever, but as soon as we go in there and start bombing, we will never get every last one of them and they will never stop coming at us. At our buildings, at our stadiums, at our monuments.
I, of course, reserve the right to change this opinion later, but for now, I feel it is correct.
