Some people want to bash Condoleeza Rice for having a Chevron oil tanker named after her while she was on their Board of Directors. Big deal. She should have a fleet of tankers named after her! (It was re-named the Altair Voyager last May.) Liberals just can't seem to stomach a successful, intelligent, female, African-American role model like Condi Rice. They want to call her a sell-out, a token, a transgendered "Uncle Tom." Here's some background on her:

"Not many people can add the position of National Security Advisor to their list of achievements, especially if those people are women. Condoleezza Rice, however, can place the accomplishment right up there with being a previous member to President Bush’s foreign-policy team, and tenured professor and provost in the political science department of the prestigious Stanford University.

Rice is well known for her knowledge on Russian history and current events. After growing up in Birmingham, Alabama during a time of racial segregation, Rice soon went on to graduate from the University of Denver at the age of 19 (she skipped two grades), where she became an expert in the issues of the Soviet Union. She also received two advanced degrees in political science. With a master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate from the University of Denver’s Graduate School of International Studies, she soon found herself a provost and professor at Stanford, only to be drawn away by a life in politics. In Washington, D.C., Rice worked on nuclear strategic planning with the Council on Foreign Relations fellowship at the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

After returning to Stanford, she soon found herself back in the political spotlight. President George Bush, in 1989, trusted Rice to the point of allowing her to aid in Russian policy and relations. Rice became the director of Soviet and East European affairs with the National Security Council, special assistant to the president for national security affairs and senior director for Soviet affairs in the National Security Council. In essence, Rice helped Poland receive needed reforms, as well as helped with policies between the United States and the Soviet Union.

With foreign policy becoming increasingly important after Bush announced his “War on Terrorism,” the position of national security advisor has also come under scrutiny. As a 45-year-old African American woman, Condaleezza Rice definitely has some opposition to face. Still, Rice has proven herself to be anything but a pushover. President Bush says “Dr. Rice is not only a brilliant person; she is an experienced person. She is a good manager. I trust her judgment. America will find that she is a wise person, and I’m honored [she joined] the administration”.

Rice also shows strong opinions concerning what it means to be American, and how America fits within the realm of the rest of the world. “Power matters. But there can be no absence of moral content in American foreign policy, and furthermore, the American people wouldn't accept such an absence. Europeans giggle at this and say we're naive and so on, but we're not Europeans, we're Americans -- and we have different principles”.

Rice considers herself completely Republican in all issues. With regards to foreign policy, she sees herself as conservative. On other issues, however, she views herself as libertarian and moderate. Still, “Ms. Rice is considered less isolationist than some leading Republicans… She has said she will work to promote Mr. Bush's vision of combining ‘humility with strength’ around the world”.

So just what does the most politically powerful black woman in politics do? BBC News.com describes her as having the responsibility “for providing policy advice directly to the president, in coordination with the State Department, the Defense Department and the CIA.”

As the only female African-American to hold the position of National Security Advisor, Condoleeza Rice has received much attention. African-American Colin Powell occupied this position before, but this remains the first time a female has taken on the role. Interestingly, the name Condoleeza translates from an Italian musical term, “the sweetness.” However, those who know Rice recognize her confidence, capabilities and intelligence. So when “the most academic member of the Bush foreign affairs team” (BBC News.com) happens to be young, black and female, the world suddenly takes notice.

“ There aren't too many females in this business, she was really an exception in this almost 100-percent-male crowd -- which may be one of the reasons she earned the reputation of being tough," said Sergei Rogov, director of the Russian Institute of U.S. and Canada Studies in Moscow, who has known Rice for nearly two decades.

Condoleeza Rice has been a member on the boards of directors for the Charles Schwab Corporation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Chevron Corporation, the University of Notre Dame, the International Advisory Council of J.P. Morgan and the San Francisco Board of Governors. She also has invested time working on various political books, such as “Germany Unified and Europe Transformed,” “The Gorbachev Era,” and “Uncertain Allegiance: The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army.”

Great article expressing a view that isn't what we're normally spoon-fed by the traditional media regarding black men in our society.

It's refreshing to see that a good majority of blacks in this country, at least all the ones I know, see right through the race-baiting and hatred that the self-appointed black "leaders", namely Al, Jesse, Cornel, Kweisi, etc. spew out on a daily basis. Instead, they see it for what it really is: crying victim and victimology. John McWhorter is so damn cool.

In response to President Bush's idea to spend $135 million for abstinence-only education, we get this:

"We should be providing support for programs that actually work," said Maureen O'Leary,
executive director of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, via e-mail. "We should continue
educating our youth on the necessities of condom use rather than assuming they will never have
sex.

"And if we advocate for abstinence until marriage, where does that leave gay people who are not
able to marry?" she asked.

Ironic. Uganda has cut it's AIDS rate by 50% in 10 years through Abstinence Education. The rest of Africa has been pushing condoms and their AIDS rates are high double digit. Compare and contrast. It is so completely retarded that anal-sex having, penis sucking, semen swallowing homosexuals would complain about something that has been PROVEN to work to decrease AIDS simply because it requires constraints on their behavior. THAT, my good friends, is why AIDS will not go away. Not because we didn't throw enough money or condoms at the problem, but because the spreaders of the disease were not willing to modify their behavior to embrace best proven solution. They want to cry that they are victims of the system, of hetero oppression, of non-acceptance, of stereotypes, of "hate" or homophobes, when in fact, they are only victims of their own behavior and their own refusal to modify that behavior to save their own lives. ( I know AIDS/HIV is not just a queer disease.) Just like the alcoholic crying for a new liver, or the 30 year smoker trying to sue the tobacco company. The alcoholic knew what would happen if he drank too much. The smoker knew cigarettes cause cancer. The homo knows a condom wrapped penis isn't entirely safe to stick in his @#$. To the drinker, the cigarette smoker as well as the pole smoker, I have 3 words:

Too bad.

In the mean time, the rest of us non-gays, will refrain from casual "safe"-sex with or without condoms because they don't appear to offer the same level of "protection" as the gay crowd would have us believe. Thank you very much, but us smart people will abstain.

Ok, so I had some free time this afternoon. I decided to build a little personal One-Man Balloon. I saw a guy do this a few years ago on the news. I went to the Army Surplus and got some weather balloons. 5 tanks of Helium from "Party Palace" only set me back about $350 w/deposit. Two lawn chairs, 6 rolls of duct tape, 9 Bud Lite and a disposable camera: $35. I took up a cooler with some sandwiches, my cell phone, an old BB gun and a 100 foot rope, just in case. I figured I'd gently drift up to 'bout 50 feet, snap some pictures, rope a tree and chill while having a beer, shoot a balloon or two out to drift gently back down.
Not really how it worked out.
I shot up like a rocket.
Went about 300 feet in the first minute. Took a good picture. See that brown roof sort of in the middle? My house is just to the right of that, 5th house on the right.
After about 5 minutes, I had gone a bit higher. Really wished I'd packed a sweater.
After a few more beers, I sort of relaxed and decided to enjoy the ride. I figured to go any higher I'd have to jettison some of my excess balast. I dropped the cooler near the High School while the Marching Band was practicing, knowing that they'd have no idea what beer was. Band fags.
Well that reduction in weight, plus some semi-tornadic winds shot me even higher. Damn, it is cold up here.
Boy, those airline pilots sure are polite! They keep giving me hand gestures, saying I'm "Number One!." Wrong finger, though. Must be a pilot thing.

Pretty interesting really. The little area I live sets right between the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

After about 6 hours, I start to loose a bit of altitude and I swear, I think that's that Sears Tower in the distance. Yep, I'm over South Chicagoland. I start getting the hang of how to steer this thing so that I can go over Olympia Fields. Yep, there's the house I grew up in! By this time I was out of film and really had to take a dump. Bad buzz.
So. What'd you do today?
Marriage is good for society. Every society and culture through the history of civilization has respected Marriage. Marriage is good for society. A man and a woman in a committed relationship, raising their children together. Marriage is good for society. Anyone who disagrees with this concept has an agenda. Why do these people think that they are smarter than the collective wisdom of history?
Although Cal Thomas is a bit tough to look at, he is a very good writer and Conservative thinker. Here is a great article on the topic.

While you're in the area, be sure to check out Ann Coulter's article. Damn, I love this woman.
Liberals want Choice. They feel that people should have the right to choose for themselves. They claim that the Constitution gives them this Choice. (Ask them to find it and show it to you and you're in for a long wait.) Choice! Choice is good! Choice is their right! Choice, Choice, Choice!
Except for School Choice.
Except for the Choice to own or carry a firearm.
Except for any other Choice that doesn't support their agenda.
Choice!
They've made the Choice to be Lemming-Think Idiots. That's their Choice.

The fact that my tax dollars go to fund this man and help spread his biased bullshit opinions on the publicly funded airways (PBS), makes me want to choke on my own scrotum.
It sickens me that what was supposed to be a Public venue has become a Liberal Only venue. Listen to NPR for more than 2 minutes to hear what I mean. I can't stomach it. I was in our Liberal-as-all-shit Marketing Director's office last night going over a project. She, of course, had NPR on softly in the background. "Intelligent Talk" my ass. Nina Totenberg gave the obit of a "pioneer queen", a man who wore womens clothes in the late 60's, started some riots, blah, blah, blah. All delivered in the trademark decrescendo NPR-speak. Nina kept referring to this man as "she." I finally yelled, "HE was a MAN in a dress. That doesn't make him a SHE anymore than sticking a carrot up his ass makes him a SALAD! AAAARRRGGGHHHHH!!!!"

About 5 years ago I sent NPR a check for $100. They have since spent about $200 in postage trying to get more money out of me, despite the fact that I wrote them a letter asking them to stop, and telling them that they will never get another dime out of me until the publicly apologize for giving convicted murderer Mumia Abu-Jamal a microphone. God, I hate NPR.

I find it mind-numbing how liberals react when a Conservative mentions condoms and/or abstinence. What is it about abstinence promotion by Conservatives that Liberals are so threatened by? In light of Colin Powell's comments regarding condom usage, liberals seem to be having a collective circle-jerk in celebration of an apparent kink in the unified armor of conservatism that the White House team has assembled. Liberals try desparately to paint any conservative thought as "far right-wing" and "ultra conservative." Name calling and lexicon manipulation aside, rarely do they actually ever offer up a solution that works. The great condom debate is no different. Liberals view the conservative position of abstinence as archaic and unrealistic, while offering that condoms should be promoted to facilitate "Safe Sex." As big a fan as I am of cutesy alliteration, Safe Sex simply hasn't been proven to work. Abstinence, on the other hand, has. In fact, by using Planned Parenthood's self-congratulatory & suspect statistics, they brag about condoms' effectiveness of birth control while claiming "only" a 14% failure rate! Good job, rubbers! Hell, that's only 4% worse than going bare-back, Commando-style, no glove lovin'.

("Hey kids, use a condom 100 times and you'll have less than 15 children! Woo-hoo! See, kids, Condoms Work! Nevermind those 14 pregnancies, you have the right to kill them! Nevermind the STDs, nevermind the lower self-esteem, nevermind the genital warts, nevermind the cervical cancer. Heck, kids'll be kids!! Don't listen to those Ultra far right-wing fanatics who promote abstinence, they're just preaching their religous opinions, besides, they're just crazy fundamentalists! When in doubt, call them names! Wear a condom and you'll stop AIDS! ")

Then, they'll applaud the amazing condoms ability to prevent the spread of AIDS out of one side of their mouth, while the other side freely admits that there is not a condom on the market that can withstand the conditions and brutal nature of mano-e-mano anal sex. Sure, for 2 committed same sex partners in a loving relationship, your everyday condom may offer some protection while they gently slip slide away while listening to Elton, Madonna, Barbara or Bette. However, for your typical public restroom cruisin' butt bandit, there is no amount of latex or lube that will suffice that rectal onslaught. You can scream "Condoms!" and "AIDS!" til you're blue in the face, but the one's in most need of wearing condoms, simply won't put one on.
In the mean time, trying to convince the rest of the population of the wonderfulness (I made it up) of condoms while in plain view of their miserable shortcomings (2.) (3.) (4.), simply won't work. Condoms won't prevent AIDS or teen pregnancy anymore than energy conservation will produce more energy. Abstinence, on the other hand, has proven throughout the course of history, to be 100% effective every single time it's been used. Read that last sentence again. Now again. And again and again until it sinks the fuck in. 100% effective. 100% of the time. Does someone have a problem with 100% effectiveness? It costs nothing. It's available 100% of the time. True, it does expect a bit more of people, and that may be a problem for some. It seems that Liberals have a hard time expecting good things or high standards out of people. One of my favorite quotes, and I have no idea who it should be credited to is "The problem isn't that people aim high and miss, it's that they aim low and hit." That, to me, is the big difference between Liberals and Conservatives, we expect different things out of people.

Liberals will agrue that the problem of AIDS in Africa is so bad that condoms are the only answer. Fine. We've been giving them condoms and safe sex education for years. How's that working for them so far? Thought so. It's just like when the Liberal Peace-niks cry that we should "Give Peace A Chance." We already GAVE peace a chance. It got our World Trade Center burned down. In the same light, we've given condoms a shot. All one has to do is look at Africa for a quick status report. Maybe it's time we tried another more effective technique.

I was driving back to the office today listening to the radio. I should know better. They were talking about those V-Day stats below. Essentially, everyone's a victim. It doesn't matter if a woman has actually been the victim of any crime, she's still a victim just because she's a woman. It's the Cult of Victimology. Having a vagina makes you a victim. Being poor makes you a victim. Being a non-American makes you a victim. Being non-white makes you a victim. Being gay makes you a victim. On one of those liberal blogs I visit, the women are complaining of being the only member of their family to attend college and how they feel the rest of the family looks at them different. They're victims. God, I know it's wrong to hate, but I hate victims. Not true victims, but self-appointed ones. Actually, I'm conflicted. I'm not sure who I hate more, the actual self-appointed victims or those that champion their cause. For example, those sorry excuses for men who actually say that they are ashamed to be men because of violence towards women. Self-appointed victim. I've actually seen men say this, and it makes me want to puke on them. It just goes to confirm my theory that some men will do anything to get laid and most women will fall for it. I have nothing to do with violence against women. Why should I be ashamed to be a man? Oh, that's right; Women Good-Men Bad. F that.
New Comment function a bit big textually.
As a fairly hard-core fan of fly-fishing, I've found the winter months a bit more tolerable by tying my own flys. But, even with the vast array of flies to tie, it can get a bit old.

Finally, I think I've found another winter hobby. Making my own Bonsia-Kitten! I'll be stopping by the Humane Society today to pick up a few kittens! Can't wait to get started!
Yesterdays post was pretty offensive, huh? What was my point? The point was that some things just aren't funny. I don't know, maybe I'm just getting older, but I'm sure maybe 15 years ago I would have laughed my ass off at the "Abortions Tickle" t-shirt. Now I think it's just as digusting as encouraging men to rape and abuse women more. THAT was the point.

However, to "raise awareness" (a favorite Liberal term), I've decided to change the name of this blog for a few days.

Thursday, February 14, 2002

I found these stats on some feminists page today. She also had a link to a site that sells offensive and femist t-shirts. One of the shirts reads: "Abortions Tickle!" It's in that same black humor that I post the following stats and make my subsequent comments.

* 1 in 6 women in the United States has
experienced an attempted or completed
sexual assault.
* Somewhere in America a woman is
battered, usually by her intimate partner,
every 15 seconds.
* Somewhere in America, a woman is
raped every 90 seconds.
* 1 in 3 murdered females are killed by a
partner, versus 3.6% of males.
* Approximately 1 million women are
stalked annually in the United States.
* According to the Justice Department, 1
in 2 rape victims is under 18; 1 in 6 is
under 12.
* Boys who witness their fathers' violence
are 10 times more likely to engage in
spouse abuse in later adulthood than
boys from non-violent homes.
* Of the 1,977 high school girls aged
14-18 surveyed in 1997 study, about 20%
reported that they had been hit, slapped,
shoved or forced into sexual activity by a
dating partner.
* Domestic violence often does not
consist of a single incident; it is instead a
continual state of victimization.
* In 47% of rapes, the victim sustained
injuries other than rape injuries.
* Battering is the leading cause of injury
to women aged 15 to 44 in the United
States.
* Approximately 50% of the homeless
women and children in the United States
are on the streets because of violence in
their homes. * Domestic violence occurs
in approximately 25-33% of same-sex
relationships.
* Pregnant or recently pregnant women
are more likely to be the victims of
homicide than to die of any other cause.

Guys, we can do better than that. Better use of your free-time could really bump those numbers up. A little less couch-sittin', a little more fist swingin'.

Meisenheimer. Pronounced "My-zen-Hy-mer." It doesn't really roll off the tongue now, does it? You'd probably go by "Meis", too. But, it's just a name. Not too bad a name as far as names go, really. For the most part, we came here in 1840. There was a shipwreck off the coast of Cape Rose, Newfoundland. My Great-great-great grand father, Philip, lost his wife and all 5 children in the wreck. He washed up on shore naked and alone. He married again, had 2 more children die as infants as well as his wife. His third marriage produced 7 more children and my line. In history, there have been some really great Meisenheimer's.

Here's one. A hero. A firefighter. Killed 9-11 in the Trade Center attack.Ray.

The rest pale in comparison, but are worth mentioning, nonetheless.

There is a chemical reaction named after one of us. I have no idea what this means. Maybe this will help explain. Duh. I have had people ask me if I knew much about chemistry, though. I just looked at them stupidly.

A scholarship to Ole Miss.

Swimmers.

There are at least a dozen University professors who are Dr. Meisenheimer somewhere. 2. 3. 4. 5. Poncho Meis?
(I'm glad these people are mostly hard science Dr.'s and not soft, liberal-art pussified doctors.) Spoke too soon?

M.D.s 2.

A TV Sports guy.

Make that, "Swimmer AND Yo-Yo Historian/Collector".

Damn, we really do love physics and chemistry.

"Hi, let me tell ya a little bit about myself. I am thrice divorced, and I live in a van down by the river......." Motivational Speaker Meis" ?!

Whoa, this just in.....make that "Swimmer, Yo-Yo Historian/Colletor AND M.D./Surgeon."

We're statistically quite rare!

We carry badges and we're not affraid to take your coke..

Ok, so is there something this guy can't do? Make that "Swimmer, Yo-Yo Historian/Collector, M.D./Surgeon AND published author!"

Anyhow, as you can see, we've infected most areas of society. Now, I'm going to trace some genealogy and see if I can link mine to Ray.

At 4:00pm every day, I go here, "The Dave Glover Show." You'll need some kind of media player, speakers, etc, and need to click on the purple "Yahoo listen" button. If you're in St. Louis, it''s 97.1 FM from 4-7. After 7, Laura Ingraham comes on. Love her. Thin conservative blonde. Rrrrrrrrr.

As far as Dave Glover goes, some times I almost wet my pants, other times I scream at my radio "YOU STOLE THAT FROM 'THE ONION'!!!!" Either way, he is funnier than shit and I love that I can eat all kinds of company bandwidth by listening to him online from this awesome Dell laptop I call mine.
A fact check on Democrat Majority Leader Tom Daschle’s recent comments on Enron:
Daschle:

"The last thing we should do is politicize this [Enron] scandal. There is a tremendous amount of work to be done to get the facts and find out what we have to do to ensure that it doesn't happen again. We don't need to politicize it."

(Sen. Daschle, CNN’s "American Morning," 1/30/02)

Fact Check:

On several occasions, Senator Daschle has politicized the Enron failure in his comments.

"I think that we are slowly ‘Enronizing’ the economy, ‘Enronizing’ the budget. We are -- we are taking the same approach Enron used in sapping retirement funds and providing them to those at the very top. That's exactly what Enron did, and I'd sure hate to see the United States do that, as well, but that seems to be -- to be the practice."

(Sen. Daschle, press conference, 1/24/02)

"I don’t want to ‘Enron’ the people of the United States. I don’t want to see them holding the bag at the end of the day, just like Enron employees have held the bag."

(Sen. Daschle, press conference, 1/23/02)

"I don't want to see happen to all of the country, to our retirees, what happened to the employees of the Enron Corporation."

(Sen. Daschle, CBS’s "Face the Nation," 1/27/02

Douche-bag.

I added another link there to the little link section. It's to Southern Partisan Magazine. I know, I know, how polictically incorrect could I be? But, before you rush off to condemn me or it, answer one small question: Have you ever read it? No? Then how have you based your opinion? Oooooohhh, you've heard of it and some people think it's racist so it must be, of course. Wrong. Open your mind a bit. Expose yourself a tad. Maybe even learn something in the process. Then, and only then can you rush off to judgement. Did you know, for example, that this months featured writer is regular contributor Walter Williams? (Psssst, he's a real black guy who, I swear to God, is a real Conservative.) He's an excellent writer and I love most of what he says.
I seem to have gotten into a pissing match with some liberal women on one of their sites regarding the Bush Admin's attempt to classify fetuses as unborn children in order to afford them insurance benefits and pre-natal care. It seems that we have reduced it to a semantic battle over the term "fetus." As usual, I am right, using the AMA's definition of fetus as an unborn child from the end of the eigth week after conception until birth. One of them wants to liken a fetus to sperm, or deny what it obviously is; an unborn child. Another seems convinced that this classification is "insane." Anyhow, quite amusing. I find it funny that they will go to such great lengths to avoid using the words "child" or "baby." One of the keys to the acceptance of the brutal attempt by the Nazis to exterminate the Jews was very similar. By de-humanizing the Jews, calling them parasites, sub-human, human garbage, etc., it became possible and acceptable to murder them. Language is very, very important.

On my way to work this morning, I was thinking of another way to pose it to these die-hard pro-choicers. They are mad that "the Bushies" have made this fetus classification in order to extend pre-natal care to poor women. Maybe if they thought of it in a different sense, they'd see how ridiculous they are being. What if one removed the abortion aspect for a second and imagined that pre-natal care to poor women and fetuses already existed and Bush wanted to end it? Can you imagine how fast they'd be screaming that W doesn't care about women and children?! Suddenly, it would be a child, simply because it fits their agenda. In the meantime, they'll continue to think that a fetus isn't a child because to admit that would be tantamount to admitting that abortion actually kills a real live child. As long as they can call it something else, they'll feel justified and morally safe to continue aborting children. It's also like the issue of slavery. Southern slave owners felt justified in owning slaves and treating them as their property, denying the slaves their rights and humanity, and using the time tested technique of language control. Abraham Lincoln said to Stephen Douglas regarding slavery, "We never have the right to do a wrong."

I had a hard time going to sleep last night, after watching the Rams get beat. So I'm watching 187 channels blur by as I rapid fire the remote @ 5 channels per second. Suddenly I see one of my favorite movies, "A Hand-Maids Tale" on the Sci-Fi Channel. For those of you out there with scrotums, this movie is to feminism what "A River Runs Through It" is to fly-fishing. Futuristic/Realistic military state takes over, encamps some women, and others get to be child-bearers. ("Precious Gift" with their hands held up like a grail, I almost wet my pants every time they say it.) Anyhow, most hard-core femi-nazi's see this as an inevitable consequence of our patriarchal society. I see it as a playful romp through fantasy! Actually, it is such a heinous load of crap, but, there are women out there that are convinced that this is going to happen if we overturn Roe. They think that women will become property, rich women will enslave poor women to have their children, and it will all be sanctioned by the State. I love the fact that one of the only places that will air this miserable piece of trash is the Sci-Fi Channel, and then, only at like 2:00 am. I only wish that the old Mystery Science 3000 guys would have aired it and gone off on it's rampant stupidity. About 2 weeks ago on NPR (I know, I know), Diane Rheem(?) was talking about Margaret Atwood, the writer of the book f the same name. Oy vay. First off, is Diane really Joe Lieberman's mother? She sure sounds like it. Secondly, they took call after call of lezbo-femi-nazi-kooks who swear this wil happen. Personally, I find it comforting to know that women will so eagerly go to such great lengths to prove themselves too emotional and reactionary to ever be elected to high public office. The fact that these callers actually think they represent any kind of majority of public opinion is completely absurd. These women are on the lunatic fringe of whatever movement they claim to represent. If they're not, it just goes to help my first point regarding their un-electability. (I made it up.)

News Media Bias
The media are mostly liberal and pro-abortion (over 80 percent of the national media voted for Clinton in the last election). This bias is cleanly reflected in news coverage of the abortion debate. Gina Kolata, the New York Times health reporter is quite frank about it.

“If you read their pieces, you can usually figure out what they [reporters] think…Anybody who reads the New York Times who doesn’t think the New York Times is pro-choice, they are out of their minds…we send messages all the time about what we think,” Kolata said.

The Media Research Center, a media watchdog organization, documents five ways that the news media slant their coverage of the abortion issue: (1) the pro-life viewpoint is presented as ideological while the pro-abortion side is not, (2) the abortion issue is divisive only in the Republican party, (3) reporters show little interest in the facts behind partial-birth abortion, (4) pro-life protests and activities are not news, and (5) pro-abortion violence is not news.

In a survey of 1,050 stories in the New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today in 1995 and 1996 mentioning at least one of four pro-life groups or four abortion advocacy groups found that pro-life groups were labeled ‘conservative’ in 47 percent of the articles. Abortion advocacy groups were called “liberal” in less than three percent of the articles.

The National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) was labeled “liberal” in 7 out of 131 articles (5 percent). The Feminist Majority Foundation was called “liberal” once in 38 stories. Planned Parenthood, the largest national abortion-provider, was described as “liberal” only in 7 out of 315 articles (2.2 percent). The National Organization of Women (NOW) was labeled 4 times out of 168 articles (2 percent).

Media Research Center also notes that usually no “liberal” nametag accompanied NARAL, Planned Parenthood, or NOW, even though each organization funds political action committees that give millions of dollars to liberal Democratic candidates.

The media also controls the abortion lexicon. In none of the 387 stories on pro-life groups were they ever described as “pro-life,” but rather as “anti-abortion,” “abortion opponents,” or “abortion foes.” Predictably, in 682 reports on abortion advocacy groups, the terms “’pro-abortion,” “abortion suppliers,” or “abortion advocates” were not used. Instead, reporters referred to them as “abortion rights suppliers.”

U.S. News & World Report gives a typical example of media characterization: “Specter [R-Pa] hopes his pro-abortion-rights stand and other moderate positions will make him an attractive alternative to the party’s increasingly dominant far-right wing.” (November 7, 1994 ‘Washington Whispers’)

During the 1996 party conventions the three major networks devoted 60 morning and evening news segments to the abortion language in the Republican platform. On the Sunday morning interview shows one week before the convention, reporters asked 27 questions about the possible exclusion of pro-abortion Republicans. Arguments over the Democratic abortion stance as well as the exclusion of pro-life Pennsylvania governor Bob Casey and Rep. Tony Hall from convention speaking was unmentioned.

While Congress and the President wrangled over partial-birth abortion in 1995, the media made only feeble attempts to investigate the process. U.S. News & World Report wrote that about “100 to 400” partial-birth abortions were performed each year. ABC World News Now reported that “13,000” took place. Many news stories and programs called the procedure “rare” and “little-used.”

Ron Fitzsimmons, director of National Coalition of Abortion Providers, admitted in (tucked away on page A11) the New York Times, “[I] lied thorough my teeth” on an appearance on ABC’s Nightline. The Times wrote that he had said, “[T]he procedure was used rarely and only on women whose lives were in danger or whose fetuses were damaged.” He later estimated that 5,000 partial-birth abortions take place each year, many with healthy mothers and babies.

When most people think of abortion violence, the first thing that comes to mind are abortion clinic bombings and shootings. Pro-abortion violence, let alone the violence of the abortion procedure itself, is seldom talked about or even known to exist. While constantly focusing on anti-abortion violence, the news media dutifully avoids reporting violence on the other side. In 1995 Pro-abortionist Daniel Adam Mahoney was indicted under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act after he threatened to kill workers at a crisis pregnancy center and told an operator at the National Life Center he would kill protesters at abortion clinics.

In 1994 Earnest Robertson Jr. was picking up his wife at a Baton Rouge, Louisiana abortion clinic when he got into an argument with a protester. He drew a 9-mm pistol and shot him once before the gun jammed. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder.

Alice Hand called a Catholic church three times in January of 1995 and threatened to blow it up. When she was arrested she said the Catholic Church was responsible for abortion violence.

The Gainesville, Florida office of National Right to Life was firebombed with a Molotov cocktail in 1993 by pro-abortion activists.

In July of 1993 abortionist David Benjamin was convicted of murder in New York after a messy abortion killed Guadalupe Negron. Earlier that year, Angela Ruiz Hanna, a woman with no medical training who still performed abortions, killed Angela Neito Sanchez during an botched abortion. Sanchez had arrived at the clinic with two of her children.

Suresh Gandora lost his California abortion license after he perforated Magdalena Ortega-Rodriguez’s uterus and she bled to death.

All of these events, with a few exceptions, were more or less ignored by the national media.
